New GRDC Funded Intercropping Project

Intercropping wheat and faba beans

FarmLink recently signed a contract with GRDC for a new project titled Investigation and understanding of opportunities for intercropping in the Riverina Region of NSW. The project brings together replicated plot trials, paddock scale crop evaluation and farmer experience to provide information and learning opportunities to growers interested in this production method.

The replicated plot trials, conducted at the Temora Agricultural Innovation Centre (TAIC), will produce hard data on crop yields and grain quality for different combinations of intercrops as compared to monocultures of the same varieties, to quantify the potential benefits of intercropping. In 2026 the plot trials feature wheat and faba beans in one trial (shown in the photograph), and canola and faba beans in a second trial.

Paddock scale crops on growers’ properties will also be monitored as part of the project, along with adjacent monocultures, to provide another source of data for assessing the performance of intercrops relative to monocultures.

Just as important as these trials, however, will be learning from growers who are already incorporating intercropping into their production systems. A series of field walks will be held, providing the opportunity to learn from the successes and failures of growers. Each field walk will focus on a certain aspect of intercropping, including sowing, in season management, harvesting and grading of intercrops.

If you are interested in learning more about intercropping watch the Farmlink social media and eLink newsletter for upcoming field walks over the next two years.

The FarmLink Field Day on September 4th, 2026, will feature a site visit to the replicated plot trials at TAIC, providing an ideal opportunity to hear more about this project.

If you are practicing intercropping on your property and would be willing to host a field walk and share your experiences with other growers, or for more information about this project, please contact:
