The Link Summer 21

In this edition of The Link we are focusing on the issue of nitrogen. Following two strong seasons and anticipated soaring costs in urea and transport for 2022 we expect growers will be examining ways to conserve N. To that end we include a number of resources that support this objective.

  • A 16pg booklet 'NIV19: Nitrogen Variability Case Study Series' summarising Eva Moffitt's research across 5 sites in our region.

  • A summer spray feature - focusing on how proactive control of summer weeds will conserve both soil moisture and nitrogen, providing a great return on the weed-control investment.

  • Brendan Pattison case study - we revisit a grower from Marrar with whom we did a companion cropping case study in 2019 to see how his philosophy and management approach has evolved. Brendan is using legumes to build soil N and hopes to move away from synthetic urea altogether.

  • Group 14 (previously Group G) herbicides - how some of the newer chemistries can boost the efficacy of existing chemical control tactics.

  • A cover cropping piece from Hart Bros Seeds examining how cover crops can boost soil N.
