Exclusion Lamb Feeder Trial

Project Partners: FarmLink, Sheepmatters, Meat and Livestock Australia
Project code: L.PDS.2001
Project location: FarmLink region

Background

Studies indicate that early introduction of food to lambs before weaning increases feed acceptance and leads to faster weight gain. The provision of feed exclusively to lambs is practically difficult however due to competition from ewes. Exclusion feeding systems address this issue by physically isolating access to feeders so grain is only accessible to lambs.

FarmLink has partnered with Sheepmatters to investigate the hypothesis that lambs with exclusive access to grain via an exclusion feeding system will put on weight more quickly and therefore have a more efficient conversion rate as well reduced cost in grain consumption compared to lambs who share access to grain with ewes.
